Read below about the vapor cloud

Quote:
At transonic speeds intense low-pressure areas form at various points around an aircraft. If conditions are right (i.e. high humidity) visible clouds will form in these low-pressure areas as shown in the illustration; these are called Prandtl-Glauert singularities. These clouds remain with the aircraft as it travels. It is not necessary for the aircraft as a whole to reach supersonic speeds for these clouds to form.

Some pics of a very low flyby

Here are a few from my last TDY

1st is of a P-3 getting ready to taxi to the hammerhead to do a high idle engine run

2nd is a shot of the thermal imaging camera inside the firetruck pointed at the P-3. The bright white is the heat from the engines at high idle.

3rd pic is the same as the second but looking out the windshield of the Striker T3000.

Just had to add these two here. What I would give to go back in time to the 9th grade, and STUDY, so i could at least get a shot at flying one of these one day. This is the ultimate job...not the Top Gear guys...THESE guys have the best job in the world.

Funny fact about the Swiss...***A report in the Swiss news magazine FACTS reveals that the Swiss Air Force only provides ready-to-take-off aircraft during office hours -- on working days. The air force staff declared that, due to financial limits, they are not operational all the time. The difficulty of defending Swiss airspace is illustrated by the small size of the country; the maximum extension of Switzerland is 348 km, a distance that can be flown in little over 20 minutes by commercial aircraft. Further, Switzerland's policy of neutrality means that they are unlikely to be deployed elsewhere.***
