Cool Went to WV for a road trip

We did a tour with the AACA for a week in the mountains of West Virginia. Some crazy roads with 6 to 10 percent grades! Gave the wagon's brakes a real workout!

Drove past the Green Bank Radio Telescope

Then went on a train ride to the top of a mountain
One of the coal fired steam engines was built in 1928, the other was older!

three cylinders on each side

gear drive to all the wheels

some of the cars on the tour, was open to 1935 to 1996 vehicles

Stopped at an over look after driving into the clouds

Looks like a fun trip! Those train engines are pretty interesting. I would imagine they take a lot of maintenance to stay in service with all the open gearing and what not.

We did have a lot of fun. Saw parts of the country we probably wouldn't have ever visited otherwise... Beautiful countryside tis time of year, not sure about in the winter...
The steam engines are wild! About half way up the mountain they stopped the train so the engineers could lube everything.
It was really crazy watching the crank shaft spinning while the thing is in motion!
