Huge explosion...

Memorial Day weekend race in Texas, keep an eye on the Corvette of Kenny Esner. Grant McCrary is in the TT Mustang in the other lane.

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/E...-of_163390.htm

He escaped with some minor facial burns but it could have been a whole lot worse. Keep your eye on the passenger side of the car, at around the 1:28 mark you can actually see Kenny crawling out of the car. I know alot of guys on here have street cars and don't have to worry about it, but for the guys who have full out drag cars or who have to have equipment in the drivers cockpit, be aware of placement. Imagine how bad it could have been if he couldn't crawl over the N2O bottles, or had a huge intercooler he couldn't get around.

Wow.......that was incredible. Wonder if he had a suppression system? If so, it doesn't look like it was doing much....if anything. I am sure he will consider one now if he doesn't have one....

From the best I can understand he had the Halon fire systems as required from the association he was running with but in the midst of trying to stop the car, the sudden explosion, and being pinned against the wall, he simply panicked and did not pull the trigger on it.

Do they know yet what caused it?

I don't think they are quite sure what caused the initial explosion, they think that it may have been a fuel solenoid stuck closed on the 3rd stage of n2o. Once the extra nitrous was dumped into the engine with no extra fuel it created a bomb and the result is the explosion seen in the vid. The fire is a result of fuel lines beings broke/ripped off as the manifold blew off the top of engine thus dumping raw fuel all over the place.

I am not sure how accurate that can be, I am not very experience with the outlaw 10.5 stuff like Esner runs but I do know that alot of nitrous pro mod guys have their 3rd (and sometimes 4th) kits on a lot earlier than shown in the vid. Dropped valves could also account for the backfire or a timing retard for the system not coming on.

Long story short, the initial backfire through the intake could be caused by a multitude of things.
