Police examine black box after fatal wreck
Raleigh, N.C. — Investigators are examining a event-data recorder, or black box, from a Ford Mustang that split in two during a crash off Capital Boulevard early Sunday.
Alton Brothers, 25, of 3034 Taybran Lane in Raleigh, and Jamie Alesia Shepherd, 25, of 8464 S. Creek Road in Willow Spring, died when Brothers lost control of the 2001 Mustang. The vehicle hit a tree near Crabtree Boulevard and broke in half.
A second passenger, Shebreeka Matthews, 24, of 3060 Morgan Mills Court in Raleigh, suffered minor injuries.
Police have recovered the Mustang's black box and were collecting information from it, according to search warrants.
Brothers was driving at least 105 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to a preliminary investigation. Earlier, police said they suspected alcohol might have been involved in the wreck.
Brothers and Shepherd were ejected from the car and landed in a nearby construction pond. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Who says that's not what the cops called it and they're just passing it on?

So did the black box tell them they were speeding or drinking?
What a waste of time, money and manpower.

Um yeah, the air bag module stores speed, when you hit the brakes, how long from brakes to impact and other things. It will tell them alot of info.

Of course.......but the "black box" label is the most rediculous thing I've seen from a news station.......well I guess I can't go that far. :)

Hmm ... well, what would you call it then? Downloading some various computer chip's memory buffer? Although it only stores the last few moments of data, I think the "concept" of "black box" is indeed what it is.
I just now looked up "black box" on wikipedia, and they even mention "event data recorder in automobiles"... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box_%28transportation%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box_%28transportation%29)

I still check WRAL for my local news. It won't hamper me from continuing that daily habit, but things like this really irritate me. In fact, anything to actually do with cars or any type of racing........always ends up with some kind of verbage that sounds like its from "The Fast and Furious" on WRAL. Maybe they should put a straight man in charge of anything automotive related. :)

I'd call it a control module. Thats all it is. Its going to vary between the different manufacturers as to which control module in particular stores this information, but yes most late model cars store crash data. I don't even know, but it could be mandated.
I'm not saying the cars can't store this information, I just hate how its labelled "black box". Some people think all kinds of information is stored in a mystical 'black box' in their cars.......from personal information, to times and dates of places they have been. I saw a TV show a couple years ago that actually said that.....it was the most rediculous shit I have ever seen on TV.

Of course, whether you call it "black box" information or not, it kinda concerns me that historical info in the car's computer(s), and GPS, etc, might be used (or misused) by police, insurance companies, attorneys, etc.
I can't find a really "good" article on this right now, but here is an article that touches on several points:
http://www.search-autoparts.com/searchautoparts/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=197207
And, case-in-point ... you guys with a GPS - does your GPS store your "maximum speed" and your "average speed"? What if those numbers would incriminate you? What if you're in a wreck, and someone tries to sue you, and wants to use that info (from your GPS) against you? Something to think about...

I still bet their problem in cases like this is that they trust the cops. The cop calls it a black box so they do too.

I'd be more willing to bet the cops told them about the data recorder and made the comparison to the black box on a plane to help them understand what they were talking about. Then they called it a black box. I've dealt with media a lot over the years, what you tell them and what they report is often very different.

I believe that orange is the universal color for them....the better to make them standout from the wreckage so they can be found.

Folks from the mountains don't wear seatbelts so they can jump out just before they run off the mountain.
I won't go into my rant about WRAL's reporting about Pastor Sam Wynn's wife. I'm constantly amazed about how much misinformation is posted before any credible facts have been disclosed.
Maybe they used the term "black box" since that is what most people associate with a airplane(even though car) crash. What would you understand more black box or control module? Don't forget most of us understand what that control module does, but does the average person know? I think they were making it easy for the general public to understand.

Sounds like you understand my feelings from the other story line then... I've missed the Wynn storytale.
