My PS2 keeps giving me "Disc read error" messages. Is there any place locally that I can take it, or do I have to ship it out to Sony?

Call the eb games on Capital. The one beside Starbucks. They should be able to give you a number of a guy who does it. He will have you take it to a computer store in Durham. He picks them up from there and fixes it at home. You will be able to pick it up from the computer store when he is done. He does a great job. It costs $40.00.

Search ebay as well. Guy fixed mine and turnaround was fast. It is guaranteed he can fix it. In fact he couldn't fix mine, so he sent me another one... It has worked well for a couple years

Just buy a new one used off craigslist.
Have you tried putting in a good DVD player cleaner disk?

FWIW, if you have the least bit of skill it can be fixed for free. Most of the time it is a misalignment of the laser. Search "disk read error fix" on google....some good info.
