A popular radio host and his team are off the air after some derogatory comments pertaining to Native Americans.
Listeners to G-105 (http://search.abclocal.go.com/search/results?station=wtvd&search=siteSearch&q=G-105) won't be hearing Bob Dumas (http://search.abclocal.go.com/search/results?station=wtvd&search=siteSearch&q=Bob+Dumas) and the Showgram because the radio show has been pulled following last week's comments that offended Lumbee Indians.
An apology was read over the air Tuesday morning and Vice President and General Manager Dick Harlow released this statement on the station's website. "WDCG apologizes to any listener that may have found remarks or recordings played Tuesday, April 1, 2008 during Bob and the Showgram to be offensive, derogatory or insensitive. WDCG does not condone inappropriate behavior, language or insensitive remarks."
Last week leaders of Native American organizations called for Dumas' immediate termination citing a history of derogatory comments against American Indians, African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics.

Clear Channel Communications owns the station, which is more widely known as "G105."
The controversial comments came during "Bob and the Showgram," a popular morning program hosted by longtime Raleigh radio air personality Bob Dumas.
Among other comments, members of the "Showgram" team called Indians indolent. Dumas said to his listeners, "This is the God's honest truth. You can look at the statistics -- Indians are lazy."
Greg Richardson, executive director of the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs, said his office had been bombarded by e-mails and telephone calls complaining about the issue.
"It's unlike anything I've seen really in terms of a disagreement with the way G105 handled this," he said.
Dick Harlow, general manager of WDCG, said he was not making a comment Friday. He said Dumas would not be discussing the matter with the media, either.
A statement was posted Friday afternoon on the bobandtheshowgram.com Web site:
"WDCG apologizes to any listener that may have found remarks or recordings played Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 during Bob and the Showgram to be offensive, derogatory or insensitive. WDCG does not condone inappropriate behavior, language or insensitive remarks."
The Lumbees, in particular, were singled out in the 15-minute exchange that opened Tuesday's show.
"They were questioning our Indian heritage," Richardson said.
Morgan Brittany Hunt works with the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. She talks to teens on the consequences of smoking cigarettes.
"It hurts my feelings," she said. "I'm 25 and trying to do something positive. We have doctors, we have lawyers, we have businessmen. We may have people who don't have their four-year degree, but who get up and work hard to provide for their family. I was really upset."
The exchange began when a white college intern on the show said she was marrying a Lumbee. "Hey, white girl. After you get married, are you going to have a teepee-warming party," someone quipped. "I could give you a pelt or something."
Richardson called the show's comments inflammatory.
"I think simply, it's very sad," he said, "that you would have a radio (station) like that putting that kind of information out on the air. I wonder if they understand how inflammatory those remarks can be."

On Monday morning Bob was talking about if someones dog craps in your driveway you dont immediently call the dog catcher to come get the dog, you go talk to the owner of the dog instead. I have to listen to something in my car, and since my cd player is broken, I'm pretty close to going insane trying to find stuff to listen to. The radio stations suck in Raleigh. I hope to have a new cd player next week finally. In the mornings...I don't even go to G105 in my search for something to listen to.

They need to stream in Elliot in the Morning from DC 101 (101.1 up in MD/DC/VA area), it is the best, funniest radio show on FM. Anyone that's been up there heard it? I used to listen to that every single morning, and seriously would sit in the garage for like an hour just listening to it on the car radio. About a year ago they had some indy car driver Helio Castonaevis (sp?) come in and one of the guys thought i'd be fun to race him around the DC beltway, so they set up this huge beltway race with Hummers they rented, it was funny as hell. They do all kinds of cool shit. All the radio shows around here blow ass.

Everybody knows that there's a line between making fun of someone being funny and "going too far." Example: "White people can't play sports" is funny. "Jimmy can't dunk because his dad died when he was 5" is not funny - it's going too far.

I think getting bent out of shape about the "Indians are lazy" thing is something people can get over - it's NOT a big deal. People are WAY too sensitive these days. Shows like Russ Par I've listened to as a white guy and laughed at - some stereotypes are just plain funny, be it about white, black, red, or yellow.

I just think targeting a specific young girl about her upcoming marriage is going too far. I still don't think the show should be cancelled - a heartfelt public apology on the air would be more appropriate, IMO, and life (as well as the show) goes on.

I still think Carlos Mencia and Dave Chappel had hilarious shows - they made fun of everybody in general - they didn't parade one person on the air and ream them with personal jokes. That's where I think the difference is.

Well yea, Imus didn't specify which girls, but he didn't really need to because the joke was specific in itself, and was applicable to a certain team and certain members of the team. So IMO, it still qualifies as kinda harsh and not called for because it's person specific. I still don't think what he said is harsher than the original post case, because that very negative joke is aimed directly at one person.

I think people in general in our country is a bit too "thin skinned" If I was talking to the guy on the show for instance and he made comments that I thought were a bit off color, I'd handle it between the two of us. A simple "hey, that shit aint funny and I don't appreitiate it" would have been enough for me. Unless he wouldn't stop after I voiced my displeasure with him it would be a done deal. Cancelling the program?... I don't see the need, don't listen if you don't like it. I didn't think Imus should have been cancelled for the comments he made. In actuality, he wasn't, he got cut because it was costing them too much to keep him.

IMO, when issues like this come up it gives people reason to put blame and irresponsibility on other people. You dont see it on HPJ, but on GOLO, which is part of WRAL where you can reply to stories posted, you would be amazed at some of the excuses.
