I am looking for the best NC style bbq around the Raleigh, Durham Chapel Hill area!! I love me a good chopped bbq plate or sandwich with some coleslaw..
BBq lodge off Capital is decent
ole time bbq is off western is ok
and parkers in Wilson is banging but far from Raleigh
Any other hole in the wall mom and pop style bbq places around? These bbq spots that are popping up and look like a 5 star restraunts from the outside tend to have shitty bbq. From what I have experienced eating at the mom and pop restraunts that look like shit from the outside tend to have the greatest mouth watering bbq. Post up, i'm hungry!
Post name and location of your favorite place..

IMO there are 2 dominant BBQ places around here: Parker's.........I've been to the one in Wilson, and the one in Greenville.....best around. Also Bullock's on Hillsborough Road in Durham might be THE best place in the state.

There's a place off of I85 Business (on US64 between I85B and US52) called Lexington Barbecue. It's very good. They serve the BBQ chooped or sliced with different sauces. I eat lunch or dinner there every time I'm in Lexington on business

Don Murray's (R.I.P.) :(
Doug Sauls BBQ, Manteo
Parker's BBQ, Wilson & Greenville
Gardners, Rocky Mount
BBQ Inn on Patton Ave. in Asheville does a decent Eastern NC BBQ.
My biggest all-time suprise was a catered wedding in BOSTON (yes, Boston Massoftwoshits). Amazing eastern BBQ, to my relief the owner was transplanted from Greenville.

Parker's on Greenville BLVD FTW.
Vinegar only on BBQ for me.
Lexington, NC and Kansas City, MO are both considered the "BBQ Capitol of the World"
NC, TX, TN, and MO are the only states known for their BBQ.
In Texas, BBQ is beef.
In Tennessee BBQ is ribs.
In NC BBQ is pork.
Yankees call BBQ anything cooked on the grill.

and a couple of more catering places that = the best shit I've had around the triangle.

Parkers IMO ain't all that. The couple times I ate there, I was dissapointed. Smithfeild Chicken and BBQ does a better job then they do.
Back in the day, BBQ lodge was the shit, back when there was one on South Wilmington Street across from the Shoneys (Raleigh).
Don Murrays used to have some good stuff too, but they closed their doors about a year ago. They had pretty good bananna pudding too.
Sullivans' - the one in the old part of Raleigh, the conveinent store, not the resturaunt on Glennwood - had an old lady in the back of the store who used to cook all day. They sold lunch out of the back of that store, and she had some DAMN good BBQ and chicken. We used to buy sauce from her by the gallon.
As far as going to go get a good sammich or plate of BBQ around here, it's kinda slim pickin's. Most mom and pop joints around here closed up a while back......the city pushing them out with high taxes and building upgrades.

Here in Clinton, we have a small "off the hip" joint called "Southern Style". It's a take out only place but they do have an open eating hall in a separate building. They have the absolute best BBQ you've ever put on your tongue. Not even Wilbur's or Bill's can top this place.

I worked for a general contractor downtown a few years back and ate there every week. Very tasty. Some of you Raleigh folk may remember when Cooper's used to cook the pork out back in the alley in a pit. Perhaps 10 years ago people started bitching about the smell and smoke (wtf?!) and they had to quit doing it that way. Now their stuff is cooked offsite and brought in, hence the van you always see parked out front of that place these days. It's a bad day in the capital of NC when folks start complaining about the smell of BBQ cooking.
The very best I've ever had is cooked by a neighbor of my parents out in Apex. Same dude also has some of the best fried catfish on the face of this planet.
As far as Restaurants go, Wilburs, Parkers, and Bill's (the latter got hit hard by Hurricane Fran and took a few years to get back to par IIRC) are all hard to beat.
I'd be hard pressed to say any one Restaurant in NC has the best, as they're all different in one way or another, but there's plenty of them that you'll have any easy time talking me into meeting you at for lunch. As long as it's Eastern Style and not that busted ass soupy western/Memphis style stuff:nod:

I forgot to mention one 'hole in the wall' place... BJ's in LaGrange, NC on Hwy70. One day of the week (Wednesday or Thursday, can't remember it's been so long since I ate there), they have turkey BBQ. Very good because it's lean meat and BJ's sauce is great (a sweeter sauce, they use brown sugar with the vinegar). In fact, I think I still have some of the sauce here that I bought the last time I was there.

There is a hole in the wall BBQ place on 54, a few miles north of Airport Blvd on the right.
I think its called Rubs Smokehouse.
They even got picnic tables out back you can sit at and chill when its nice.

That place is within walking distance of my work too. I need to go try it!

My all time favorite bbq came from a place in Lexington Nc. Right off bus 85, I can't remember the name of the place but it was DANK!
I believe you are referring to Lexington BBQ on US 64 right off of Business I 85. I've always preferred Speedys BBQ on NC 8 in Lexington personally.
