heard that starting in Jan. you have to wear a FULL face helmet any time you're riding and that if you don't, you're ticketed - 250.00 - and you have to leave the bike where it's at since you can't ride it until you get a full face helmet.

anyone heard this? I don't trust the source.

being that I just bought a new harley recently, I've did research before buying any helmet and can say as long as the helmet is dot aproved acording to statue 218, which basically means it has to have a dot sticker on the outside and a manufacters label on the inside stating that it has been dot approved. The foam of the helmet must be at least 1" thick, and can be a half helmet. They are trying to get rid of the so-called novelty helmet that most guys wear that have very little padding at all. here is the new law as it is in the manuals and a link to nhtsa testing of a dot helmet...

SECTION 7. G.S. 20‑140.4 reads as rewritten:

"§ 20‑140.4. Special provisions for motorcycles and mopeds.

(a) No person shall operate a motorcycle or moped upon a highway or public vehicular area:

(1) When the number of persons upon such motorcycle or moped, including the operator, shall exceed the number of persons which it was designed to carry.

(2) Unless the operator and all passengers thereon wear safety (http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109627#) helmets on their heads, with a retention strap properly secured, safety helmets of a type that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218.

(b) Violation of any provision of this section shall not be considered negligence per se or contributory negligence per se in any civil action.

(c) Any person convicted of violating this section shall have committed an infraction and shall be fined according to G.S. 20‑135.2A(e) and (f)."

SECTION 8. Section 7 of this act becomes effective January 1, 2008. The remainder of this act is effective when it becomes law.

Won't bother me - I've always used a dot-approved (open faced) helmet with the 1" thick foam. Sounds like they're gonna finally start actually enforcing the helmet rules. The cool-looking novelty helmets have been illegal for years, I think (but a lot of people wore them, and they looked way more "cool" than I looked ... unless, of course, they wrecked).

hmm ... I guess there was a bit of "rant" in there somewhere ;)

Have Harley.

Have full-faced helmet. :)

Wouldn't consider anything else.

I had not heard this law, but as written it is entirely too vague and IMO quite open to challenge. Personally, I think anyone who rides without a full-face is a certified idiot, but I would be adamently opposed to seeing it legislated.

You've got a V-Rod.....a fullface helmet doesn't seem out of place on those bikes. They have a futuristic look to them IMO, so it won't look out of place like a chopper with umpteen inches of rake and ape hangers. :)

Not at all, I actually like the V-Rod. I've seen a few I wouldn't mind having myself.....if I knew I wouldn't kill myself on it. :D

Some styles of bikes fit a certain style of gear is all..........kind of like you don't see guys on those insanely raked out choppers weather a leather jump suit........

For those curious about the exact change in the wording of the law ...

Old Wording:

... wear safety helmets of a type approved by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.

New Wording:

... wear on their head, with a retention strap properly secured, safety helmets of a type that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218.
