Question about a WorkBench?

Ok, I got a workbench for my B-day from sears. The table to is wood. What should I coat it with so oil and stuff won't stain the wood. You think I should paint it?

Maybe Thompson's water seal with a coat of varnish on top?? Dunno...

how about some type of Epoxy stuff.. Like made from the same stuff that you put on your concrete floors and stuff.. Donno just a thought since that stuff is oil/gas resistant, not sure how well it would stick to wood.
