View Full Version : Anybody ever done a sleep study?

My doctor is having me do a sleep study since I have been having some whacked out issues at night for a long time. Its already known I have sleep apnea. Luckily it only effects me when I sleep on my back which I rarely do since I am a side and stomach sleeper. But I also have bouts of insomnia which come and go and are very aggrevating. But as if thats not enough, he also says I show symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome, (RLS). Its a condition where a person may feel a discomfort or the over whelming urge to move their legs voluntary or involuntary while sleeping. Some people also feel the need to stand up and walk around at night, which I have had many times. (not sleep walking)

Anyway, my appointment is the night of August 30th. I am a little worried though since I am supposed to go in, have electrodes hooked up to me, and am then expected to sleep in a strange place. The only good night sleeps I get are in MY OWN BED. Ask anybody that was at Mustang Week with me a few weeks ago. So unless they give me some sleepy drugs, I have a feeling they are gonna be monitering somebody who is awake all night....

My pops had to get that done, because he had sleep apnea too. Found out he was waking up (but not consciously waking) over 200 times a night from his snoring. So he never actually got any good rest.

Gave him this little machine that blows air in his nose, and he sleeps like a champ now, and doesn't snore anymore.

I will be interested in hearing how this works out for you. It has been suggested that I seek help for my sleeping habits also, but I haven't and don't forsee it in the near future. But who knows. Keep us posted on the outcome. Hopefully they can get something worked out for you.

This is true. But if it was just the insomnia, that would be ok. But for them to see my RLS or sleep apnea, I will need to be asleep. I damn sure don't wanna do this twice...

Another thing that sucks. Its from 8pm until 6am... That is gonna suck for me since Im usually a night owl anyway...

The rooms we have are actually very nice, I wouldnt have a problem sleeping there. If you can sleep in a hotel room, you can sleep in one of these. They will probably hook up a C-PAP unit and some electrodes up to monitor your brain activity as you sleep. They have TV,Cable,PS2, ceiling fan, whatever you need to help you go to sleep. Like I said, its just like being in a hotel room........although the cameras do suck ass. You will be ok, and you will have a better understanding of your sleep problems and hopefully you can get them resloved.

I had one just a couple months ago. I knew I pretty much had sleep apnea before I went in........but this confirmed it. I think my doctor was explaining to me after the sleep study evaluation, that on average a person will slow their breathing down to almost a stop around 10 times per hour.........I think I did it about 30 times. I can't remember exactly......thats ballpark. My apnea is considered minor......and it is pretty much my decision whether or not I want my tonsils removed. I chose not to at the moment........I am giving it 6 months to see how I do.

The sleep study sucked royal ass. They made me cut the TV off at 11pm......and the TV is all I had. I laid in bed for a few hours before they came in and drugged me. It was definately weird having about 50 electrodes glued all over your head, neck, and chest. It made rolling over in bed a task. From the way HotSoup talks.........apparently the facility he speaks of sounds alot nicer than the G hetto unit I stayed in.

What little I do sleep, I will go from one side of the bed to the other. I relocate everything on the bed that isn't strapped down. I just don't believe those sensors would stay on, or, if they did, I would be strangled, lol.

I thought the same. When I was woken up, I surprisingly had all 40 billion of them still attached.

What I want to know is how many times I farted during the night. I am sure it affected my breathing too......pushing them out. Hell the smell might have affected me too. Well damn..............what if the rankness of my farts in my sleep causes my apnea? :ohnoes:

I will be doing this at the Rex Sleep Disorders Center. Is that where you work? If so, will you come in and read me a story? :D

As for the Hotel room comment. Thats not much help. We spent 3 nights at Mustang Week and I got MAYBE 2-3 hours of actual sleep per night. When I got home that Sunday. I slept 12 hours straight. I also roll over, ball up pillows, go from one end of the bed to the other. So the electrodes may be kinda weird. But we will just see how it goes....

I have always wanted to do one of them. I think I sleep too much. I am still tired after only 8hours. I like to shoot for 10-12hours to feel actually rested, can't be good. Does insurance cover that kind of thing?

A friend of mine at work had sleep apnea really badly. It was actually potentially life threatening in his case. He ended having his uvula removed, which actually helped him greatly. Regarding RLS, I have experienced this before myself, so I can relate. Although I don't have sleep apnea, I do suffer from a lot of insomnia. My Dr. hooked me up with some meds that help for this though. Good luck man....

I sleep too much too. Left alone I usually sleep for 11-12 hours a night. After 8 hours of sleep I'm still tired. If I only get a few hours one night (less than about 5), the next night I can sleep 13-15 hours no sweat.

I hae insomnia... its right at 9 am and still havnt slept :( I take mad sleeping pills but most dont work and if they do they knock me out for a good 15 hours.... and this mainly only happens when I dont have to work and since nothing but rain all damned day and night I havnt been able to work so im SOL :(

Also my girl kicks like hell in her sleep like bruises my legs so hard for some reason, and no matter what I cant do that hold a partner sleep thing I dono why I have to turn my head away from everything to the corner of the room where I see absolutly no light on my side/stomach with my face in a pillow THEN throw a pillow over my head and my arm over the pillow and my head lol... Then I wake up in drool the next morning hanging near off my bed on my stomach.

seems weird :( I know.

I am in the same boat. My tonsils stay swollen from it now. They did not use too. I am thinking about getting them removed really soon.

I have had 3 sleep studies done, first one a little over a year ago.Had it done because sig. other could not sleep, she said I snored too bad,and I STOPPED BREATHING for over a minute at a time, really scared her.
The sleep study said that I stopped breathing 112 times per hour.Said what happens when you are so relaxed your toungue falls back and closes up your airway, and if you have small nasal passages(like I did) and a very low upper palet, your air is cut off and you end up gasping for breathe but never know it.
Had to have a first surgury that they removed tonsils, part of my upper palet and (this really hurt) cut my tongue in the front and put a screw in my jaw and permanate stitch through my tounge where it was relaxing to hold it in place.I was out of work about three weeks.I am on the phone alot so it was tough the first few days back.
Second sleep study was done about a month after.
Said that it had not improved like it should have and was still 100 times per hour stop breathing, they tried to put the CPAP machine on me the first and second study but because of small nasal passages and it was block in the back where it should open up it caused me to suffocate.
The machine forces oxygen into your nose and you have to breathe out through your mouth-SUCKS.The nurse will get you to try this thing on and if it works great,BUT if it does they will not do surgury to fix it because it is "CURABLE" with the machine.I did not want to sleep with a machine for the rest of my life.
After the second sleep study the doctor said that this was not a drastic enough surgury the first time and wanted to do bi-mandibular soething and break my jaw and move everything forward to give my air way more room.
He had not done the nasal surgury and kept saying it would not help because the proble was in my throat,****BUT**** in the sleep study you are required to sleep on your back and if you move the wires get pulled out and it will happen and they will come in and wake you up to plug it back in.
I have always slept on my stomach, causing my mouth to stay shut and try to breathe through my nose,to sum it up,got a second opinion, had the nasl surgury, healed, did last sleep study and everything is great, finally sleep all night and do not snore as much if any.

Good Luck with it.
Let me know if you have any questions or if you want a good doctor to check you out.

Anyone have to be cold to sleep? Thats my only problem. It has to be just about freezing for me to fall asleep. As hot as it's been lately, I've had the A/C working overtime.

That is the ONLY way to sleep. Thats how I get to sleep in a hotel room.......only way really. Whenever I check in, I cut the AC on cold and the fan on high. Nothing like waking up with snot-sickles.

I love sleeping with it cold, but hate waking up with it freezing.....

Go to sleep cold, wake up warm. No light, no noise, soft pillow.
If left to my own, (when I was unemployed) I averaged about 10 hours a night.

Can't STAND to be touching someone else, and that falling asleep romantic thing is out.
I can get by with 5, prefer 7, wake up refreshed with 8, now back in the habit, and 9 is about all I can stand. Waking up past 8:30 feels like half the day is gone.

God luck Rog, it can't hurt anything. That why you were so cranky the other day, or is it just cause you were so happy to see me? :)
