I wanted to know if ya'll thought my 4x4 would make it out there. I don't want to get stuck
I drive a 96 explorer 4wd v-6. I'd take alot of air out of the tires, but do you think i'd make it?

You should be ok as long as you let the air out like you stated. Just don't get nervous and give it too much gas in the dead sand.
family used to own a hotel there....haha

Stay out of the dunes... watch out for stupid teen's in Jeeps, lower your air pressure to around 20psi, and realize that your steering reacts MUCH slower....
Oh.. and drive slow.... the bumps on the beach SUCK w/ any kind of suspension.. esp. a stock Exploder.
Other than that... have fun!

Stay out of the dunes
quite possibly the best advice youve been given. im not sure about NC but i know in Fl it's a $500 fine just for stepping on the dunes so i couldnt imagine driving on them.
i wouldnt drive on carolina beach, last time we were out there it was crawling with cops

You mean CB? I drive straight on with my truck without doing anything special, it's not bad at all.

watch out for stupid teen's in Jeeps
they were racing 4 wide on CB memorial weekend, lol
but yeah lower pressure definately. If you get stuck, STOP. Tell your friends to get out and dig you out a little free room around the tires, and get them to rock it back and forth until your free.
try to avoid going to a sudden stop. It'll build up sand in front of your tires and when you try to go you'll get bogged. Just keep a good mommentum and you'll be fine.

You didn't mention----south or north end???As the weather gets hotter-the sand gets "deeper"(or softer)-better look out for ruts-there are some stupid drivers that dictate how this sand goes.
Most important(as mentioned above)--STAY OFF THE DUNES-buddy just got a $1000 ticket for it.

The secret to driving in the sand at CB is let yer air out a little, dont make really sharp turns in the sand and if you start to get stuck and dig in --- put it in reverse and BACK outta the hole you are digging. My bf does alot of the towing for people that get stuck down there. My favorite was when we towed the Dodge that burned to the ground off of the South End. Duallies seem to have a tough time playing in the sand too. But anyway - the sand is fun too. What do you guys drive? Im in a Red Z71 with a hood scoop and black stripes.

SSGurl, something I didn't think about, don't they stop letting people drive out there at some point in the spring?

actually i believe they just started charging $10 per vehicle. They also put up a bunch of stakes so that you can get on the dunes with a car but it wouldnt be hard to knock them over

I pulled a Z71 out down there once. also saw a dude try to drive an old chrysler or something out there. needless to say he got way stuck. ended up jammng the entrance and a whole bunch of people got stuck. it was comic.

best thing ive ever seen was in st augustine florida. some guy drove his semi truck (without the trailor) on the beach and didnt stay on the hard sand all the cars usually drive on

They do charge to go out on the North and South ends now. $10 a visit or a yearly pass for $40. They have fences up to try and keep every one off of the dunes. The South end closes up at dark but the North end is open 24/7 and as far as I know they dont close at any point during the year. Pay and play now!

Genreally the people that get stuck just can't drive. There is always an exception but generally. My dads F-350 Dually Powerstroke does better in the sand than my old Range Rover did! I guess the thing is so heavy that it dosen't spin much.

heh I say stay away from the south end, I got stuck with my old 91 GMC Jimmy on 31's in the south end and my budy got stuck in his 96 GMC truck on 33's.
ut stock tires are better then mud/all terains in sand cause they dont dig... GL tho myself id keep to the North end.
